Critical Illness
Most people rarely consider or want to think of the possiblity that their good health could suddenly come to an end. Most all of us know someone who has suffered from a severe illness such as cancer or a heart attack.
We can't predict the future but why not be prepared and protect yourself and your family should a serious illness occur.
It is estimated that:
- heart attacks strike 70,000 Canadians each year -- 1 in 2 are under 65 years of age -- and 80% survive,
- 50,000 strokes occur -- 1 in 3 are under the age of 65 -- and 70% survive,
- 2,865 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every week,
- and an estimated 50,000 Canadians have Multiple Sclerosis.
Your chances of surviving a serious illness are excellent thanks to the advancements in medical science and technology. To help protect you and your family why not consider a Critical Illness Plan.
What is Critical Illness?
Dr. Marius Barnard, a renowned heart surgeon, helped develop critical illness insurance after witnessing the strains both emotionally and financially facing patients after surviving a serious illness.
Critical Illness is a coverage that allows you to collect the benefits (with coverage available from $10,000 to $2,000,000) when diagnosed with a critical illness that is covered by the plan. The lump sum is payable to your 30 days after being diagnosed with a covered serious illness which include: Cancer, Coronary Bypass, Heart Attack, Stroke. Some critical illness policies cover up to 21 major illnesses.
This money can then be used in any way you choose to assist in your recovery; for example -- reduce or pay off your mortgage and debts, medical treatment, replace lost income or to maintain your family's lifestyle while going through these difficult times.
In addition to this, many of the plans offer additional assistance services such as early intervention, access to specialists worldwide, support/counseling services, homecare resources and much more.
What if you are fortunate and don't suffer a critical illness? Several providers offer premium payback riders designed to return some or all of the eligilbe premium paid.
